I love how sustainability is being encouraged these days. Everyone seems to be getting a hang of how important sustainability is and how important it is to protect the earth and I couldn’t be happier.
Today I’ll be sharing what you need to know about sustainability. But just before we go into that, what is sustainability?

What is sustainability?
Investopedia defines sustainability as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainability is doing all we can to protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint so that the earth can be habitable for us and we can live a healthy, green, clean life.
Now that we all know what sustainability is, let’s go into what you need to know about sustainability.
What you need to know about sustainability
Your sustainability journey doesn’t have to be perfect
Sustainability is about making little conscious efforts to live a more green life. Sustainability is a process and in sustainability, every single step counts. We don’t have to be perfect when it comes to sustainability. Sustainability isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making those little changes. By making little, conscious changes to your lifestyle, you can reduce your carbon footprint and help make the earth a more habitable place for all.
Sustainability isn’t about perfection. Your lifestyle does not have to be 100% sustainable. You don’t have to be completely vegan either. Sustainability is about a more conscious consumption.
Learning about sustainability is the first step to being more sustainable
Most people fail to do this but learning about sustainability is the first step to being more sustainable. If you don’t have an idea of what sustainability is, it’s importance, and why we need to be sustainable, then practicing it might not be easy. Having a knowledge/ good grasp of sustainability and what it entails will make your journey to sustainability much easier.
Sustainaibility is a step by step thing
I have seen people start being sustainable and try to do everything all at once. Sustainability is a process. No one is expecting you to start practicing sustainability today and be all round sustainable at once. Absolutely no one.

Sustainability is an individual decision
So yea. We don’t want the earth to keep deteriorating. We don’t want to keep harming our planet. But there are people who do not care about sustainability. While it’s not right to not care about the planet we live in. It’s also important to not point accusing fingers at those who seem to not care about the wellbeing of the earth. Do not point fingers at those people as sustainability is an individual decision.
Do I change to green energy? Do I stop buying from fast fashion brands? Do I buy sustainably? All these questions are questions that everyone must answer for themselves.
Sustainability is very important but it is still an individual decision. Whenever you see people doing things that are not sustainable, instead of pointing accusing fingers at them, try to talk to them and let them know that what they are doing is wrong. Nobody is perfect. We are humans and we are allowed to make mistakes and learn from our mistakes.
Sustainability is not difficult to achieve
While sustainability might not be the easiest thing to do, it is not difficult to achieve either and it can be easily implemented into your life. In my opinion, it all boils down to what sustainability means to you. Sustainability can be as simple as deciding to buy from sustainable companies, cutting down on your plastic use, changing to more renewable energy sources. Sustainability is all about finding the right balance. And making those sustainable changes that you are capable of upholding every day.
The little things matter
A lot of people don’t realize that when it comes to sustainability, the little things matter a lot. Many people think that doing one or two sustainable acts everyday doesn’t make a difference but the little sustainable efforts do make a big difference. Did you know that the fashion industry uses 93 billion cubic meters of water every year and accounts for 10% of the world’s annual global carbon emissions? As a result of this, sustainable clothing brands have been springing up over the years. These brands have decided to produce quality clothes while reducing their carbon footprint and you making a simple decision to buy from these sustainable brands can help reduce the carbon emissions.

This is such an informative post. I think many people, myself included, sometimes feel overwhelmed by sustainability. This was a great reminder to not get overwhelmed and instead take sustainability one step at a time. Thank you for sharing.
This is a great article Ruthiee as we should all be doing our bit to be more sustainable, but at our own pace so that we are not overwhelmed. Thanks for sharing Ruthiee.
Being more sustainable is important and the little steps matter. Sometimes being sustainabile can be as easy as making little eco-friendly swaps!
Good information on sustainability. Like you, I’m also glad that people are now taking sustainability seriously. It’s been the new lifestyle trend since the pandemic and I like it. We all need to do our bit to make the earth a better place for all.
Sustainability is important! We can all learn ways to minimize our carbon footprint and we should try to do so whenever possible. Thanks for sharing.
You are so right, sustainability is an individual journey that looks different for everyone! It doesn’t have to be perfect and it likely won’t be! You have to make the next right choice every single day. We are always looking for ways to be more sustainable. Sometimes you see someone doing something and you’re like “oh man I never even thought of that!” Learn from each other, don’t judge each other.
These are all great facts about sustainability. I’ve been wanting to live more sustainably for years but my living condition has made it almost impossible. My local council doesn’t provide recycling services for the kinds of property I live in. I’ve complained several times but the council doesn’t care. The other people I share facilities with are so wasteful and I really hate to have to deal with that.
This is a very informative post. I try to live sustainably as much as possible these days as every little effort counts and the smallest sustainable acts could help reduce carbon footprint and make the environment a lot better.
At the risk of sounding like a certain supermarket, you’re spot on, Ruth! Sustainability is a step by step approach and every little helps. We’re all responsible for our carbon footprints, individuals as well as companies. Thank you for sharing! I really enjoyed this post! x
Sustainability is definitely something that everyone can do in some way. I think that even doing something small can make a big difference and be a great start! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Everywhere I go I try to be more sustainable. I recycle whenever I can and I usually get frustrated when I go to places and they don’t have any recycling. These little things help the planet so much. If we all do our bit and try to be more sustainable in our day to day activities, the earth would be a much better place.
Oh! I need to become more sustainable. Sustainability is a great way to make the planet habitable for us all and it is important for the future as well. I think sustainability is important so that we can leave our children and grandchildren a better place to live! Thank you for sharing.
Love this! I think it’s so important to remember that sustainability is a journey, and that the little things really do count. Educating yourself more is such a great starting point! Thanks for sharing x
Wonderful post! I’m glad more people are talking about sustainability. I love how you included that it’s okay to not be perfect. I think the idea of being perfect is what usually keeps people from trying, but small steps are key! Thanks for sharing!
I really like the fact you mentioned that sustainability is a step by step process and to introduce it into our lives in small but consistent ways that we can manage. I’m not perfect at it myself as I have a lot to unlearn when it comes to what I purchase and my own life habits. This is a great breakdown of information for anyone starting out on a sustainability journey — thanks for using your platform to raise awareness!
What a brilliant post!! I’m trying to be more sustainable and have been for the past few years, it’s so important for us all to do our bit x
I’ve been really loving these kinds of blogposts which teach me more about sustainability. It’s important we all play our part to make the earth a better place. Thank you so much for sharing lovely x
I agree sustainability is an individual choice but if we can teach our children about sustainability, we might bring down the curve. One start small and go bigger and bigger.
This is such a well-written post. Not many people understand the importance of sustainability these days and it’s important to start educating on it.
These are fantastic points! Sustainability is such an important issue and we should all take action for this. These last years I have decided to shop only clothes and shoes from sustainable brands. I got my first car and chose a hybrid one for the same reason. Also I try to avoid using plastics in my everyday day life. However, it is disappointing the fact that sustainable brands are usually much more expensive than the non sustainable. Lots of people avoid them not because they want to harm this planet but due to financial issues.
As I said before, this is a really important issue. Thank you for this post Ruth!
Hi Ruth
Great post. I completely agree with you about the importance of little things – if enough of us do these little things it can make a big difference.
Thank you for raising this issue. We try to do our little bit each day, but could do more & it’s good to be conscious of the decisions we make. I am very interested in shopping from sustainable fashion brands. That could really help the planet.
It’s so great seeing more and more people getting into becoming sustainable and doing their bit to reduce waste and their carbon footprint. I agree that we should be taking smaller steps and not massive leaps to get it done as we can all make more of a difference together than just one person on their own. We can also appreciate the journey and be more conscious of what we are actually achieving as well.

I do think that sustainability is a learning curve for everyone. We all need to do our bit. Also, I think we are all definitely going to make mistakes along the way in our journey to sustainability, but correcting them is what matters! x
I learnt a lot about sustainability from reading this post. Thanks for sharing all this valuable information!
I totally agree with this post. There sure is a lot to learn about sustainability. We should all do our bit to make the planet more habitable and safe for all :)! Great post
This is a great post and I love that you wrote it in a non-judgmental tone. Sadly, for some people sustainability isn’t even possible in all aspects – money issues, living in a rural area without public transport etc. But you offer small ways to start, and that is amazing. You are right, that doing everything at once is super overwhelming. We should all do any little bit we can to make the earth more safe for everyone!
Great post and starting point for anyone who’s new to sustainability. It’s important to remember that mistakes are okay and the little things DO help, too!
This is so true! I’m always eager to learn more about sustainability and continue to make more sustainable choices in life x
Great post! Sustainability is something I’ve been thinking about more and more this year, so thank you for the tips! I really want to learn more, and it’s becoming something we discuss in college which is interesting. Thank you for sharing!

Such an informative post! Sustainability is a journey but def attainable! Great points you’ve mentioned here.
Thank you for sharing more about sustainability! You’re so right, our journey doesn’t have to be perfect, but making swaps where and if we can is important. I’ve switched a lot of things over to sustainable but I know there’s areas I could improve on.
This was really interesting to read. I agree that you shouldn’t change everything all at once. It definitely takes time.
I completely agree, it’s all about the little changes, if we all make small concious actions to be more sustainable it’ll make a huge difference in the end.
This is such a good post! I definitely agree about the step by step point, I tried being sustainable with everything at once and that REALLY didn’t work out for me and almost made me give it up. In the end it’s all about switching things up one area at a time. Thank you for educating people about that!

It is definitely a process and long term. Doesn’t impact overnight. We need to make responsible choices. There is still confusion over renewable sources and sustainability concept and needs to be clarified. It is sustainability that matters in the end. I like your topics you do then different. xx
